Day two of epic journey

We drove to a place called Punakaiki, or The Pancake Rocks. The rock layers looked like stacked pancakes! When I find where Nick has hidden the file of our pics I will put some in. I have never seen so many flax plants before.. Outside the gift shop we were lucky enough to see a mother Weka and her chicks having a scratch around.
We drove on to Hokitika - Greenstone capital of NZ. Every second store was a NZ Jade/Greenstone store. Of course we bought some. You have to gift it or it is bad luck so Nick's mum and I got each other some earrings in a koru design.
Stayed at Franz Josef for the night in a place called Glenfern Villas.

catch up

Well am back from jaunt around south island...drove something like 2500 km in 9 days. SO sick of driving, yet what are we doin' this week? Tackling 5 hour drive with James to look at volcanoes lol. James arrived yesterday to stay for a week which is nice.

So South Island highlights part 1:
Started with ferry crossing from Wellington to Picton. A 3 hour cruise..but with 4 to 6 metre swells which meant we had waves breaking over the top of the ferry. When I say Ferry, it's more like a cruise ship..

So I enjoyed the trip but the ship looked like a war zone with bodies all over the floor groaning.
We picked up our hire car and started off. First night we spent at a lovely B & B called Birds Ferry Lodge. The 4 of us were the only guests and we ended our night in the hot tub watching the stars coem out in the sky above.
Up early the next day and off towards Franz Josef Glacier.
